Biographical Sketch

Jerome Wexler was born in New York City on February 6, 1923, to Lewis and Rose Leiberman Wexler. He received his education at the Pratt Institute and the University of Connecticut.

Wexler became interested in photography in his ninth grade science class, but he did not immediately pursue it as a profession. After high school, he served an apprenticeship as a machinist/toolmaker. During World War II, Wexler served in the U.S. Army. His career in photography began after his discharge in1946 when he took a job with the State Department as a civilian photographer in Europe. While overseas, Wexler saw a need for farmers to be instructed in the latest farming techniques. Upon his return to the United States in 1950, he started a stock photo company in Wallingford, Connecticut, called the Agricultural Photo Library. The photos demonstrated both good and bad farming practices, and approximately five thousand were published worldwide.

In 1958, Wexler gave up the photo library and worked as a tool and parts inspector in New Haven, Connecticut. Within five years, however, he returned to the field of photography. Using his machinist skills, he built some equipment designed to take photographs which produced an image twenty times an object's normal size. Using this equipment, Wexler began taking close-up shots of plants, animals, and insects.

Wexler began his book publishing career in 1967 with a book entitled Milkweed, for which he provided the photographs and Millicent E. Selsam wrote the text. Since then, his partnership with Selsam has led to the publication of eighteen books. In addition to Selsam, he has collaborated with several other authors. He published eleven books with Joanna Cole, two with Patricia Lauber, one with Carolyn Meyer, and twelve on his own, for a total of forty-four informational books for children relating to science and nature.

Wexler has received hundreds of awards for his books and photographs from organizations such as the American Institute of Graphic Arts for The Carrot and Other Root Vegetables and the National Science Teachers Association for A Calf Is Born, The Harlequin Moth, A Chick Hatches, Vegetables From Stems and Leaves, Apple and Other Fruits, and My Puppy Is Born. A Chick Hatches was also a Children's Books Showcase title in 1977.

Wexler has two children, and he currently lives in Madison, Connecticut. Some of his photographs have been published under the name Roy Delmar.

Scope and Content

The Jerome Wexler Papers are divided into ten series: biographical materials, correspondence, published books, other publications using Wexler's photographs, scrapbooks of published photographs, miscellaneous photographs, royalty statements, unpublished materials, publishers' catalogs, and original newspapers. The biographical materials include a photograph of Wexler, numerous articles, and biographical sketches for Contemporary Authors and Who's Who in the East. The second series contains general correspondence with the de Grummond Collection, publishers, schools, and libraries. Items in this series are arranged in chronological order.

The third series comprises the bulk of the collection. It consists of original materials related to forty-four books published between 1967 and 1995, including correspondence, typescripts, galleys, proofs, photographs, and reviews. These materials are arranged alphabetically by title, and within each title, according to the probable order in which they were created.

Wexler contributed the photographs for a number of books written by Millicent E. Selsam. The Amazing Dandelion, Catnip, Cotton, Maple Tree, Milkweed, Mimosa, The Sensitive Plant, Mushrooms, Peanut, and Popcorn provide detailed narratives about the history, characteristics, and developmental stages of each of these plants, as well as tips on how to grow them. Bulbs, Corms, and Such differentiates between the types of bulbs and roots from which flowers and plants grow. Play With Plants illustrates how plants grow and offers suggestions and experiments to try at home. The Apple and Other Fruits, The Carrot and Other Root Vegetables, and The Tomato and Other Fruit Vegetables describe the growth and development of different kind of fruits and vegetables. Eat the Fruit, Plant the Seed explains how to grow plants from the seeds found inside some fruits. The Plants We Eat and Vegetables From Stems and Leaves tell about the fruits and vegetables humans can eat. The Harlequin Moth, Wexler and Selsam's only project that does not focus on plants, details the complete life story of this interesting insect.

Wexler's collaboration with Joanna Cole resulted in the publication of several series of children's books about animals. A Bird's Body, A Cat's Body, A Frog's Body, A Horse's Body, An Insect's Body, and A Snake's Body provide detailed descriptions of the unique bodies and habits of each of these animals. A Calf Is Born, A Chick Hatches, A Fish Hatches, and My Puppy Is Born document the process by which these animals are born, from conception to birth or hatching. Find the Hidden Insect discusses how insects blend into their surroundings and why it is necessary for them to do so.

Wexler's cooperation with Patricia Lauber produced two books about flowers and plants. From Flower to Flower examines the pollination process and Seeds: Pop-Stick-Glide explains the different methods in which seedlings travel away from their parent plants and form new plants.

Wexler also wrote a number of books himself. Everyday Mysteries features close-up photographs of a variety of plants, animals, and foods; Flowers, Fruits, Seeds explains that the primary function of a flower is to produce fruits that contain seeds; and From Spore to Spore illustrates the life cycle of a fern. Pet Gerbils, Pet Hamsters, and Pet Mice offer guidance and instruction on the best way to care for these kinds of pets. Jack-in-the-Pulpit, Queen Anne's Lace, Secrets of the Venus's Fly Trap, and Wonderful Pussy Willows provide descriptive explanations about the development and characteristics of each of these unique plants. Sundew Stranglers describes the different kinds of plants that eat insects.

In addition to his other publications, Wexler worked with Carolyn Meyer on a book called Rock Tumbling: From Stones to Gems to Jewelry, which details the process of turning rocks into gems and jewelry. How to Tumble Polish Gemstones and Make Tumbled Gem Jewelry is a similar step-by-step guide to this process.

Following the book materials are a number of other publications that used Wexler's photographs, such as agricultural books, newsletters, advertisements, periodicals, and newspapers. These items are organized by type, and alphabetically within each subheading.

The fifth series consists of pages from a scrapbook of some of Wexler's photographs published between 1954 and 1959. The next series contains several miscellaneous photographs. All but one of these photographs were taken by Wexler. The last photograph is of publishing partner Millicent E. Selsam with a group of children. Following the photographs are royalty statements from books between 1966 and 1996. These statements are in chronological order and include both personal and publishers' records.

Also included in the collection are typescripts from four unpublished books written by Wexler. The titles, "African Violets," "Did You Know That," "Look What I Found in the Park," and "Magic Magnifying Glass," are arranged alphabetically. In addition to the typescript, photographs are also included for "African Violets."

The ninth series contains publishers' catalogs and guides dating from 1967 to 1986, including Crown Publishing Group, Dodd, Mead & Company, and William Morrow & Company. The catalogs are in alphabetical order according to publisher. The last series consists of original newspapers from which articles and photographs were photocopied and filed into the collection.
