Biographical Sketch
Gloria Kamen was born in New York City on April 9, 1923. She studied at the Pratt
Institute from 1939 to 1942, and at the Art Student's League of New York from 1942 to
1945. In 1947, she married Elliot Charney, a research scientist. She worked for
Fairchild Publications from 1947 to 1949, before becoming a freelance designer, doing
magazine illustration, package design, book jackets and book covers.
Beginning in 1964, Ms. Kamen began illustrating books for children, starting with The Little Kingdom by Hughie Call. She also gives illustrated talks on books to children, and has had several one-person shows in galleries.

Scope and Content
The collection contains material for six books. The materials are arranged
alphabetically by title. Within each title the materials are arranged in the probable order
in which they were created. Four of these titles are represented in this collection with
illustrations and sketches. For Rupert Piper and Megan, the Valuable Girl there
is only an illustration. For When Shoes Eat Socks, the collection holds a
dummy.
