What ARE Native Plants?
News item published on: 2026-04-10 14:35:00April is recognized as Native Plant Month both in Mississippi and across the country. Mississippi alone is home to more than 2,700 native plant species, including a rich variety of trees, shrubs, vines, grasses, and wildflowers—all uniquely adapted to the state’s climate and environment. Despite their abundance and importance, many of these plants go unnoticed, and their vital role is often overlooked.
Join us on Monday, April 27, from 6:30–7:30 p.m. in Cook Library room 209A for an engaging presentation designed to raise awareness of native plants and deepen understanding of the essential role they play in supporting local wildlife and sustaining the ecosystems we rely on. The presentation will be led by Nadine Phillips, interlibrary loan librarian and president of the Mississippi Native Plant Society.
Native plants aren’t just important—they’re indispensable. At a critical moment for planetary health, now is the time to share knowledge and take action. By growing and incorporating native plants into our landscapes, we can all contribute to healthier, more resilient ecosystems.
Discover how native plants are not only beneficial, but beautifully so!
