Form of Material:

Ben Shahn was an important American artist who created these lithographs of Michael Schwerner, James Chaney, and Andrew Goodman, the three civil rights workers murdered in Neshoba County, Mississippi in June 1964 at the beginning of what would be called 'Mississippi Freedom Summer'.

The three matted and framed lithographs are done in black ink on white paper with the subjects' names in red and signed by the artist. They are believed to have been based on the photographs that appeared on the F.B.I. wanted posters which were distributed until the men's bodies were found buried in an earthen dam in August. Identical lithographs are part of Shahn's 1965 "Nine Drawings" portfolio.

They were purchased by Mr. Dennis Horn of Jackson, Mississippi at an auction held by the Mississippi American Civil Liberties Union in December 1995 and donated to the USM Archives in 1996 by his wife, Ms. Shirley Payne, a Jackson attorney who represented plaintiffs who had filed suit to open the State Sovereignty Commission records in the Mississippi Department of History.
