Abstract: The collection contains three booklets and one individual page of poetry composed by Idelle Pride of Ellisville, Mississippi. One booklet is typed on State Teachers College stationery.
Mississippi Normal College (now the University of Southern Mississippi) became the State Teachers College by a legislative act on March 7, 1924. Joe Cook was president of the institution until 1928.
Pride writes of her teachers and campus life in her poems, as well as the death of her daughter Rachel and her father in 1925.
Scope and Content Note
The poetry within the collection is contained in three booklets: one untitled, one titled “Modern Poetry” and typed on State Teachers College stationery (“Joe Cook, President” in the letterhead), and the third entitled “Fragments.” There is also a separate page of poetry with the handwritten heading “Submitted by (Miss) Idelle Pride of Ellisville, Mississippi.”
Several of the poems have annotations in pencil, additional or alternate lines as well as dates. The poems span a wide range of topics including family and friendship, religion, and campus life.
