Title: Civil War Stationery

Abstract: The collection contains four song sheets printed by Charles Magnus during the Civil War.  Each sheet features different song lyrics and a patriotic lithograph.

Biographical/Historical Note

Charles Magnus (1826-1900), born Julian Carl Magnus in Elberfeld, Germany,immigrated to New York City with his family in 1848.  He began working as a printer with his older brother Carl Emil to publish the German language newspaper Deutsche Schnellpost in 1850.  During his career he published over a thousand maps, song sheets, and prints and is best known for his city views and Civil War prints, although he often combined his own original work with that of other printers and artists without crediting the original source.

The song sheets in this collection are from two series Magnus printed entitled “500 Illustrated Ballads” and “Ten Illustrated Songs,” both series of patriotic song sheets with lithographs.

Scope and Content Note

The collection contains four printed song sheets from the Civil War: “The Army and Navy For Ever,” “Sheridan’s ‘Early’ Victory,” “Sherman’s March to the Sea,” and “Willie, We Have Missed You.”  Each sheet includes a patriotic lithograph, and the verso (reverse) side of each sheet is lined.
