Abstract: The collection contains the valedictory speech of William Duke (1875-1940), entitled “Learning and Labor,” from his high school graduation at Lake Como, Mississippi, in 1892.

Biographical/Historical Note

William Duke (1875-1940) was valedictorian of his high school and prepared the speech “Learning and Labor” for his graduation address at Lake Como, Mississippi.  He expresses some surprise at being valedictorian and writes that he is “awfully glad” to only have a few minutes to speak.

Scope and Content Note

The collection contains the nine-page handwritten speech prepared by William Duke and includes an accompanying typed transcript.
