Abstract: The collection includes various items related to Anita Prados’ time as a student at Mississippi Normal College (now known as the University of Southern Mississippi) from 1914 to 1915, including an “Application for Advance College Credits” from 1922.

Anita Prados attended Mississippi Normal College from 1914 to 1915 after graduating from Gulfport High School.  She received her five years’ teacher’s certificate while there, a certificate that could become permanent if the holder taught for five years.

Mississippi Normal College, founded in 1910 as the state’s first state-supported teachers’ training school, hosted about four hundred students in 1915.  The campus had only a few buildings, including two women’s dorms (Ms. Prados stayed in Hattiesburg Hall), one men’s dorm, and a building, now College Hall, which held administrative offices, an auditorium, and classrooms.  A streetcar line ran from the entrance of the College to Hattiesburg, connecting the isolated campus to the town.

The collection includes correspondence between Dr. Aubrey K. Lucas and Anita Prados describing her time at Mississippi Normal College as well as photocopies of photographs from 1915.  There is also a 1922 “Application for Advance College Credit” from Mississippi Normal College within the collection.
