Accessions were also transferred from the S. G. Thigpen Papers (M446) and the Postcard Collection (M36).

Copyright: This collection may be protected from unauthorized copying by the Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code).

Processing Information: Collection processed and finding aid written by Lauren Stealey, June, 2013.

Biographical/Historical Sketch:
The Southern Tourism Collection includes pamphlets, brochures, maps, booklets, and fliers for destinations and events primarily in the American South.  With bright colors and catchy copy, these materials advertise pilgrimages, museums, festivals, fishing trips, parks, casinos, hotels, restaurants, and more.

Scope and content:
The Southern Tourism Collection includes advertisements for tourist destinations throughout the United States, with the vast majority located in the American South.  This collection is organized geographically, and each geographic level (i.e. country, state, Mississippi region, county, and city) is organized alphabetically.

These materials cover approximately ten different states, with most state-level material concentrated in Mississippi.  Additionally, it encompasses eleven different regions within Mississippi, with particular emphasis on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. At the county-level, this collection includes materials from twenty-two of Mississippi’s eighty-two counties.

The bulk of this collection is comprised of attractions and events advertised for specific cities.  Approximately ninety different cities are represented in this collection, almost entirely from Mississippi.  The Mississippi cities of Biloxi, Hattiesburg, Jackson, Natchez, and Vicksburg are particularly strongly represented in this collection.

In its second series, this collection contains five stereographic images and one glass slide.

Series I: Country, Region, State, Mississippi Region, County, City

Series II: Stereographic Images and Glass Slide
