Biographical/Historical Sketch:

William Haile, addressee of the letter in this collection, was born in 1797 and moved to Mississippi where he settled at Woodville. In 1825 Haile was elected a representative to the Mississippi Legislature from Wilkinson county. He became prominent in legislative activity on slavery and banking. When United States Congressman Christopher Rankin died in March 1826, Haile was elected his successor. He was re-elected to the U.S. Congress for the 1827-29 term but resigned in 1828. Re-entering the Mississippi legislature, he was defeated for the position of Speaker of the House in 1830. A contemporary described Haile as a representative unsurpassed and unequaled for zeal and ability. Haile died on March 7, 1837, near Woodville at about 40 years of age.

The Ordnance Department was established as part of the United States Army within the War Department by an act of Congress in 1812; from 1821-1832 it was part of Artillery.

Scope and Content:

This collection consists of a letter from G. Bomford of the United States Army Ordnance Department in Washington, D.C. It was written on December 11, 1826, to Mississippi Congressman William Haile, whose earlier letter to the Secretary of War had been referred to the Ordnance Department. Bomford explains how arms for each state's militia are apportioned and informs Haile that arms for Mississippi are ready for delivery when required by the Governor of the state.
