Mrs. Esther K. Gunn’s letter announcing her retirement from being a Jones County Extension Home Economist. Her career began in 1938 and ended in 1976.

This quote from her two page letter sums up her career “we have come from mattress making, wood stoves and kerosene lamps to micro-wave cookery, double-knit polyester garments that really are wash and wear, garbage disposers and trash compactors and disposable ‘everythings’.” She began working at the end of the Great Depression and worked through WWII, she saw the T.V.A. create electric power for families and the flood control project take away entire communities. All of this for a beginning annual salary of $800.
