Historical Note:

The events of the preceding years left the Democratic party in an enviable position during the presidential election of 1976. One party leader quipped, "We could run an aardvark this year and win." Instead, they ran Jimmy Carter of Georgia who capitalized on post-Watergate cynicism promising "I will never tell a lie to the American people." He became the first president from the Deep South since 1849. In securing the Democratic nomination, Carter beat out conservative George Wallace of Alabama and liberal Morris K. Udall of Arizona. Both Wallace and Udall passed away in 1998.
