Special Collections at McCain Library & Archives received the Mississippi Library Association’s Public Relations Award for Best Effort by an Individual Library to Publicize Library Services around a Single Theme or Event. The award was given for the Item of the Month feature that Special Collections began producing in February 2007.

Each month, a librarian, staff member, or student selects an item (letter, book, photograph, etc.) which is researched, scanned or photographed, and then made accessible online. The books, manuscripts, ephemera, and realia featured as the Item of the Month can be found in the University Archives, Historical Manuscripts, de Grummond Children's Literature Collection, Mississippiana, and Rare Books which are all located in Special Collections.

Award winners were announced at the MLA Awards Brunch held on the final day of the MLA Annual Conference in Biloxi, Mississippi on October 18, 2013. Jennifer Brannock, Curator of Rare Books and Mississippiana, is the originator of the Item of the Month feature and accepted this award on behalf of Special Collections.
