The Friends of University Libraries invites you to join us on March 6, 2012, for a reception honoring author Jonathan Odell and the release of his novel The Healing. The reception will be held at the Powerhouse Restaurant on The University of Southern Mississippi's Hattiesburg campus at 8:00 p.m. immediately following the University Forum event. The University Forum, hosted in conjunction with the Honor's College, begins at 6:30 p.m. in Wilbur Stout Hall. We encourage the community to take advantage of this free opportunity to hear Mr. Odell speak about the historical context of his novel and to join Friends of University Libraries for the reception afterwards.

Odell connects with his Mississippi roots through his creation of Polly Shine, a healer purchased by a southern plantation owner. Troubled by his wife's disturbing mental state and concerned about a mysterious plague that is sweeping through the plantation in the pre-Civil War South, Master Satterfield gets more than he bargained for when Polly's sharp tongue and troubling predictions cause unrest throughout the plantation.
