University Libraries to Host Open Access Events

University Libraries will participate in Open Access events during the month of October in an effort to provide the Southern Miss academic and research community the opportunity to learn about the potential benefits of open access. Open Access events take place around the world each year, and Southern Miss faculty and students will be able to attend three sessions focused on open access.

2019 Open Access Schedule:

No Big Deal? Understanding New Trends in Academic Publishing
Josh Cromwell, Scholarly Communications Manager
October 10 at 3 p.m.
Cook Library 123

In recent years, libraries have had to cancel some of their large journal subscription bundles, known as “big deals,” because the costs of these bundles have become unsustainable. What do these changes mean for researchers? Could the same thing happen here? How are publishers responding? This presentation offers an overview of some of the catalyzing forces behind these changes and will examine several new initiatives (Plan S, Projekt DEAL, the University of California system’s “transformative agreements”) that offer insight into where academic publishing may be heading in the years to come.

Documentary Screening of Paywall: The Business of Scholarship
October 16 at 12 p.m.
Cook Library 123

Join us for a screening of the film Paywall: The Business of Scholarship, a documentary produced and directed by Jason Schmitt, Associate Professor and Chair of Communication and Media at Clarkson University.

According to the film’s website: “Paywall: The Business of Scholarship is a documentary which focuses on the need for open access to research and science. The film questions the rationale behind the $25.2 billion a year that flows into for-profit academic publishers, examines the 35-40% profit margin associated with the top academic publisher, Elsevier, and looks at how that profit margin is often greater than some of the most profitable tech companies such as Apple, Facebook, and Google.”

The public is invited to attend. Lunch registration is now closed, and lunch will only be provided to those who registered.

Panel Discussion – Reactions and Responses to the Paywall Documentary
October 22 at 3 p.m.
Cook Library 123

Panelists:
Dr. Steven R. Moser, Provost
Dr. Trent Gould, Dean, College of College of Education and Human Science
Dr. Chris Winstead, Dean, College of Arts and Sciences
Dr. Doug Masterson, Associate Provost, Institutional Effectiveness
Dr. Sam Bruton, Director, Office of Research Integrity and University Research Integrity Officer
Dr. Teresa Welsh, Director, School of Library and Information Science
Dr. John Eye, Dean, University Libraries

The documentary film Paywall explains many of the challenges and issues that exist in the current publishing model, and it offers some possible alternatives to the current model. But how should universities respond? And what, if anything, does this mean for Southern Miss? Join us for a discussion with faculty and other University leaders to think about these and other questions raised by the Paywall film.
